The Great Outdoors- Austin.

Recently I have found myself with a decent amount of time but not a clue of how to spend it. Every day I tell myself to get off of the couch and into the gym, but it is way harder done than said. I always love the way that I feel after I exercise. I feel refreshed, strong and kind of invincible. Just doing the elliptical hasn’t been cutting it for me as of late. I usually try and do a dance class or something that doesn’t feel so “exercisey” so that I am still getting a good work out but also having a good time. I have been trying to think of ways to exercise while taking advantage of this insanely beautiful (and freakishly warm) winter we have been having. I have a bike, but am too scared to ride it. I have running shoes, but absolutely hate running. So this past weekend, some friends and I decided to go out into the 75 degree February weather and go kayaking! I have been wanting to kayak on Town Lake since I moved to Austin but hangovers and schoolwork have always interfered. Finally, I went. And I am so glad that I did.

We went to the underpass located under Mopac and walked on a short trail to Texas Rowing Center. The dock was really easy to find as it is right next to Austin High- impossible to miss. Even the walk from the car to the dock was motivating seeing all of the people running and walking and just being active. We rented two tripple kayaks (there were 6 of us) at $25.00 per boat for one hour ($20.00 on weekdays) and hit the water. The whole experience was such a refreshing change from my average sunday on the couch. The leisure paddle turned competitive at moments but it was all in good fun. On the way back to the dock we could most definitely feel the burn. Not only were our arms exhausted but our abs and backs were feelin it too.

Whether you are interested in some solo mind-clearing or an active group activity, the water is definitely the place to be.There are so many great outdoor activities in Austin. I can’t wait to take advantage of more of them!
